  2. Germany has been winning trade and market share within the Eurozone for over a decade, and it has been financing its export surpluses with excessive lending to the net importing countries like Portugal. Now, the German creditors must recognize some losses on the earlier “easy export credit” and the German must make do with lower export sales to the overleveraged peripheral countries.
This is just basic international economics, surpluses/deficts cannot accumulate forever, they have to be rebalanced.
Pity Portugal instead, which is borrowing to import Porsches, luxury watches and submarines, and whose trade deficit is still increasing, and whose children will still be paying for the imported electronic gadgets they get this Christmas when they are old and grey.

The Single Currency problems come from overleveraging and overly easy credit, which comes from trade imbalances, which come from Single Market problems and excessive, unnecessary and unfettered imports.

Portugal doesn’t need to leave the Single Currency, but it does need a LONG vacation from the Single Market.
