Oldest Ally helps to understand XX Century Portugal

Um livro publicado em 1961, poucos meses após o sequestro do navio Santa Maria por Henrique Galvão, ajudou a entender o Portugal do século XX, a partir da perspectiva de sua antiga aliança política e comercial com a Inglaterra. 

Este livro "O Aliado mais Antigo, um retrato do Portugal de Salazar, foi uma revelação para uma jovem estudante universitária   circa 1970, procurando entender porque é Portugal era muito mais pobre do que o norte da Califórnia, apesar de o mesmo clima ameno. Ao reler o livro, recorda-se que a divergência entre parceiros comerciais, ditos aliados, não é uma novidade do século XXI e da era do Euro. Já vem dantes.

 A book published in 1961, a few months after the highjacking of the ship Santa Maria by Henrique Galvão, helped to understand Portugal in the XX century, from the perspective of its oldest political and commercial alliance with England. 
This book was an important  revelation to a young college student at circa 1970, struggling to understand why Portugal was so much poorer than northern California, despite the same lovely weather.
